What Didn’t Make The Cut?
By: Ann Everett

What did you edit out of this book? In Chirp, I edited out a ton of stuff. Over 10,000 words! In first drafts, I just write, write, write. Once I’m finished, I go back and cut, cut, cut.
Turns out, I write a lot of stuff that isn’t needed. I’m talking things that don’t move the story forward. When I’m writing the rough draft, I don’t pick up on those things, but once I reach “The End” and read the story from start to finish, that useless information jumps out at me.
When the beta readers get a hold of it, sometimes they point out even more places I need to trim. I do keep the deleted scenes in case I want to use them as a teaching tool for other writers.

In True, I didn’t cut as much. Maybe because it was the second book in the series, and I was more familiar with the territory. Or, maybe I just loved Chirp and Rance so much I didn’t want to end their story!!
